Obedience Before Outcome: A Biblical Perspective on Success

March 08, 20262 min read

We live in a results-driven world. Numbers matter. Sales matter. Growth matters.

But Scripture tells a different story.

Obedience before outcome is the pattern we see throughout the Bible — and it reshapes how Christian writers define success.

If you’re building a platform, writing a book, or pursuing a calling, this shift changes everything.

“To Obey Is Better Than Sacrifice”

This struggle between obedience and visible results is not new; Scripture speaks directly to it in 1 Samuel 15:22 (NASB).

“Has the Lord as much delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices
As in obeying the voice of the Lord?
Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice,
And to heed than the fat of rams.”

King Saul had performed religious acts. On the surface, it looked like devotion. But partial obedience disguised as good intentions is still disobedience.

God was not impressed with outward activity. He was looking for alignment of heart.

And that truth still confronts us today.

When Outcomes Become Our Offering

As writers and leaders, we can unknowingly do the same thing.

We offer:

  • Productivity

  • Performance

  • Visible effort

  • Measurable results

We set structured plans. We create timelines. We establish measurable goals — like the framework discussed in SMART goals for authors — and those tools are valuable.

But if outcomes replace obedience to God’s voice, we’ve missed the point.

Obedience before outcome means:

  • Writing what He prompts — not just what trends

  • Serving faithfully — not strategically manipulating visibility

  • Honoring Him in the unseen — not chasing applause

God delights in obedience more than impressive results.

The Peace That Comes From Obedience

Here’s the quiet freedom in this truth:

You are not responsible for the outcome.
You are responsible for obedience.

When obedience comes first:

  • Comparison loosens its grip

  • Anxiety softens

  • Faith deepens

  • Peace settles in

The outcome belongs to God.
The obedience belongs to you.

For the Christian Writer

If your platform feels slow…
If your book sales fluctuate…
If growth feels invisible…

Return to the question:

Am I obeying?

Strategy matters. Planning matters. Preparation matters — especially when navigating decisions like those outlined in Best Practices for Publishing in 2025. But none of those replace obedience.

Because obedience before outcome is not passive.
It is courageous trust.

And Scripture is clear —
“To obey is better than sacrifice.”

A Quiet Invitation

You may not control the outcome. But you can control your obedience.

Where might God be inviting you to choose obedience over outcome right now?
